Radio Birdsong

blue titStick your head out of a window and London and listen - you'll hear the hum of traffic, police sirens, the neighbours yelling at each other, planes flying in to Heathrow, but the one thing you won't hear is birds. They all died out years ago - apparently their mating calls cannot compete with London noise pollution and the last sparrow died of loneliness. Actually, that's not quite true - the diaspora of non-native green parrots seem to be thriving, but they are now considered a pest.

Now, a British digital radio station devoted to birdsong has been launched. It will play nothing but birdsong from 6am until midnight. This is to fill the airwaves as UK DAB broadcaster DigitalOne has shut down one of its stations. Digital radio is not terribly profitable, it seems.

This is wonderful - now you can bring the delights of birdsong back into your life by switching on the radio. It's so relaxing and... well, wholesome. I reckon if you open the windows, turn up the amp, and play a few mating calls out over the rooftops, you may be able to attract some lost species of thrush back into the city.

Re-tune your DAB radio, and simply tune it to Birdsong. There doesn't seem to be a webcast, sadly.

Oooh, I can hear doves.....
